Fairytale Gouache Painting

For my latest gouache painting I decided on a fairy tale theme to tell a 1 page story. I imagined a castle on a hill, the sky fading to a purple glow while the shadows grow long.

Below on the road, a tiny coach made from a turnip races by, pulled by a rabbit with a tiny mouse coachman holding the reins. There is a faint golden glow coming from the coach windows, but you cannot see the passenger. Is it a fairy princess? A mouse?

This little scene was painted with Shinhan Traditional Gouache in a cellulose, cold press watercolor sketchbook by Arteza.

I bought a set of these sketchbooks when I started using watercolors. Once I finally tried 100% cotton watercolor paper, I couldn’t go back to the cellulose paper for watercolor painting.

But gouache isn’t as picky a medium when it comes to paper in my experience. So these sketchbooks have been dedicated to my gouache practice.

Do you have a paper preference for gouache?
